The SAFSN is the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN in Spanish). An organism created to guarantee the maximum level of Food Safety and to promote health through a healthy nutrition, therefore is the reference webpage for every food industry.

These past months, the SAFSN has developed two useful updates for the food supplements industry on their webpage, which we explain in this article.

They created a public search engine for food supplements and foods for specific population groups. It allows consumers to look for product information or to search from their category (food supplements, food for specific population groups or mineral natural waters), their commercial name or the authority responsible for the food approval. The aim is to create a more transparent sector and promote confidence to food supplements clients. The webpage has also a research option by company name, which informs of all the products registered from that company.

On the other side, the SAFSN has also developed a search engine in reference to Regulation 1924/2006 and Regulation 432/2012, in order to ease the food operators the research of health claims of different ingredients. Regardless, it does not include claims on hold, pending on revision by the EFSA such as plants and extracts claims, but only the ones approved by the European Commission.

This tool informs of the health claims that companies are allowed to use in their labels, for instance when looking for “monacolin” the approved declaration “Monacolin K from red yeast rice contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels” comes out and also its conditions of use. It also informs of the Regulation from which this information is obtained.

We will follow the SAFSN webpage updates to keep you informed of the last developments.
